Threads of India – I

A loom recreated in sugar.
Created in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture for National Handloom Day, this collection celebrates India’s textile traditions in edible form.
Nagaland weaves. Pochampally Ikat. Kutch embroidery. Phulkari. Banarasi brocade. Kashmiri crewel. Paithani. Assam’s Gamosa. Patola. Ajrakh. Bandhej. South Indian temple borders.
Each cookie was crafted on millet bases and meticulously hand-piped using vegan royal icing. Geometric icing design recreated tie-dye dots, embroidery stitches, woven symmetry, and mirrorwork textures. Colour palettes were chosen to reflect regional authenticity.
The process required research before piping.
Understanding before interpretation.
This textile-inspired cake artistry transforms centuries-old weaving traditions into edible tribute. It is preservation of traditional crafts, translated rather than replicated.
In her artistic journey, this series reflects breadth. Not one monument, but many identities. Not one story, but a collective tapestry.
A loom, remembered softly.
